Keep It Simple

The book Raising Generation XXL covers a wide range of simple strategies that can be easily followed to lead your child into a healthier lifestyle, and goes into depth discussing the right food and lifestyle habits you should be undertaking. Below is a sampling of what you'll find inside the book.

The good news is that being overweight or obese is preventable and can be reversed. The guidelines for losing weight that follow are not difficult.  Rather, they are quite simple.  All it requires is a shift in eating and exercise habits.

Teach your children to enjoy a healthy relationship with food.  Food provides us with the energy and nutrients we need and is something to savor and indulge in.

It is your responsibility as a parent to protect your child’s health.  The number one way you can protect your child’s health is to teach them to make healthy food choices.  These lessons will last a lifetime, which will protect your child’s health well into adulthood.  This is the best lifelong gift you can give your child.

Many foods available in supermarkets today have been manipulated to contain a long list of chemicals that are almost impossible to pronounce, let alone identify.

We need to start thinking like hunter-gatherers.  Would they eat an apple?  Yes.  Would a hunter-gatherer eat highly processed foods with lots of chemicals in it for three meals a day, seven days a week?  No.  Going against nature always results in problems.

This does not mean that your family is never going to eat refined, processed or packaged foods again.  You can continue to eat these foods; however, you are simply going to substitute healthier processed foods for the ones you may have been consuming.

You are not going to put your child on a diet or have to count calories, unless that’s what you want to do, or what your doctor has prescribed. Rather, you are going to teach your child healthy food choices.

Eating For Health
A calorie is the measurement of the potential energy a particular unit of food contains.  Daily caloric intake needs vary depending on a person’s frame size and age.  Calories from fatty foods are denser and more easily converted into body fat than calories from proteins and carbohydrates.  You have to expend a certain amount of physical activity for the calories not to be stored as fat.

Generally speaking, the root cause of being overweight or obese is caused by consuming too many calories without burning enough of them.  That’s why the only effective weight management lifestyle is two-pronged:  a reasonable number of calories in, a reasonable amount of energy expended.  In other words, eating sensible portions of nutritious food coupled with daily physical activity.
